Even though the Hilton Head Concours and Car Club Showcase have been postponed to 2021, we still want to ‘display’ the cars entries that we received and their owners to the broader car world via our club website and social media. We’ll do that by highlighting one car/owner just about every week for the balance of this year.
MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: Michael Barbara
What can you tell us about your car? This is my first Porsche, after having waited many years for the “right time.” I was searching for a Boxster S when my wife Joanne found this one online, right at the end of the 2010 model year. It was spec’ed out by the lead salesman at the famous Holbert Porsche in Warrington, PA, and was on the showroom floor for most of the year. After a quick test drive, I bought it on the spot, even though it was a base model as it’s plenty quick enough. The Guards Red paint with a saddle interior were always my first choice. Not sure I would have thought to order the custom painted roll bars, or the matching seat belts and Sport Chrono dial, but it really makes a nice coordinated presentation! I must confess, it’s a bit of a garage queen, with less than 12,000 miles, but it’s in absolute showroom condition, and 100 percent original! I can count the times its been out in the rain, and while we lived in the Northeast, it was stored in a heated garage all winter. I think I’ll keep it for a while…
How do you feel when you drive it? As an engineer, I have an appreciation for all things mechanical, and the sound of the flat six coming up the power curve is intoxicating. I love the short, quick throw of the manual gearbox, and the feeling of a precise downshift as it accelerates into a corner. The best stress-reducer ever!
Do you have any other cars in your collection? Only this Porsche, but we also have a Tesla which is a great companion to the Boxster. One very mechanical, the other remarkably high tech…it makes for an interesting variety!
What can you tell us about you? I’m a semi-retired environmental engineer, originally from New York City, but since 2012 living full time on Hilton Head Island. I spent nearly my entire career representing industry in the investigation and clean-up of some of the largest hazardous waste (“Superfund”) sites in the country. I’m now well into my second career as a jazz musician, with a regular gig here in Hilton Head, playing acoustic bass with my Trio.
